This beautifully written fantasy tackles the issues of slavery and freedom.

Twelve-year-old Cymbril is a slave on Thunder Rake, a gigantic wagon city that rolls from town to town carrying goods to be sold by its resident merchants. The Rake’s master purchases a new slave, a mysterious boy named Loric who is one of the magical Fey. Because he can see in the dark, Loric’s duty is to guide the Rake through the treacherous wilderness at night.Cymbril and Loric secretly join forces to plan their escape—soon the two friends thread their way through a series of increasing dangers, encountering an enchanted market and deadly monsters as their one chance for freedom draws nearer.

Review:

The Star Shard is a sweet and engaging story about a young woman who is a slave on a great moving city.  It is the story of her adventures and her eventual quest for freedom from the great moving beast that is The Thunder Rake.

I was very impressed with this story.  The characters are endearing, the story flows well and the scenes are vividly described.

My favorite character in The Star Shard is actually Miwa the cat. She is kind and courageous and does everything she can to protect Cymbril.  I also liked the elf boy Loric. He is a little more aloof that I prefer but his demeanor and personality leap off the page.  I also really like Wiltwain the overseer on the Thunder Rake.  He is gruff but honorable and a good man.

The Star Shard is a great young adult read.  If you are interested in magical adventures and lots of surprises The Star Shard is one You Need To Read.
