Draft – Always a Marine Series – Heather Long

HL_The Two and the proud_LGWhere do you hail from and what do you love most about your hometown?

I don’t really have a “home town” per se. My parents traveled and moved frequently when I was growing up. I went to multiple schools in multiple cities. They seemed to semi-settle in Texas when I was seven, though we moved
around the area. So for me, my home town is where I live.

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I wanted to be everything when I was growing up. I think that’s why I became an author. I loved journalism, investigation, the law, the idea of flying and so much more.

Do you have anything new in the works and can you tell us a bit about it?

I always have a lot going on. A friend of mine teases me that I am a schizophrenic writer. I swap genres, I write paranormal, contemporary, military, erotic, and urban fantasy. In March, the first of my Soulgirls series released from Samhain and this month, I just released book four in my Fevered Hearts series.  We have so much more coming up in the next few months for fans of the Marines, never fear!

Is there anything you find particularly challenging about writing?

HL_Combat barbie_LG

There are just not enough hours in the day.

What advice would you give to writers just starting out?

Don’t give up, finish the book, write another one and hook up with writer’s groups. They can make a lonely business more fun.

Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? If so, what do you do about it?

I don’t believe in writer’s block, but I do know when a story won’t flow it’s usually because something is wrong with the story. That can make me backtrack a little and I’ll find where I made a wrong turn and then I’m on the route again.

Who is your favorite author and why?

Nalini Singh and Patricia Briggs are two of my all time favorites because they pack so much story in every book and create such rich and vivid characters.

How did you deal with rejection letters?

I tried to learn from them, the ones that give me details on what didn’t work for that editor. So many are form letters, that I took those as a personal challenge to earn a personalized rejection, from there it was get the revise and resubmit and eventually the acceptance letters.

What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever done in the name of research?

I climbed into the trunk of a car I was considering buying to figure out how many bodies would fit in it and how you could get out if you were trapped inside. I thought the sales guy would have a heart attack.

Don’t forget to give us links to your website etc.

Roger Michael Easton IV, better known as Rowdy, flouted the family’s Naval tradition to enlist the Marines—not as an officer, but a ground-pounding grunt. He never expected to see as much combat or valor as he did in the field, but every engagement furthered his commitment to his brothers in arms. Now, with an offer to end his contract early on the table, Rowdy has to take a long look at the life he left behind, the life he’s built, and the future he longs to have.

Rowdy wants a woman who gets him.

Inactive Marine, Kim Wakefield, continues to serve her country as a Naval Criminal Investigator. She’s hard on the grunts and sailors because she is one of them—and they didn’t sign up for easy.  Tired of the seedier side of military life—picking up drunk Marines, AWOL sailors, busting drug running operations, or worse, sending drug addicted servicemen to court marshal and treatment.  She longs to have her faith in her fellow Marines restored.

Kim wants a man who knows what she needs.

Thrown together by chance on a 1Night Stand, these two jarheads have a combustible chemistry—but do they have what it takes?

Release Date: February 8, 2013

Genre: M/M, Military Romance, Erotic Romance, Contemporary Romance

Lieutenant Brenden Fitzpatrick is a dedicated Marine, loyal son, and devoted uncle but he’s lonely. When he went Marine, the rule was don’t ask, don’t tell. His brothers-in-arms pretty much didn’t ask and didn’t care. Watching so many friends settle into long-term relationships highlighted the absence of someone to come home to in his life. When his unit encourages him to give the 1Night Stand service a try, he asks for the impossible—a night with the one man he almost gave up the Marines for in the first place. A man he called best friend but let time and distance carry away.

Liam Gardiner grew up on the same Boston block as his best friend, Brenden. Unlike Brenden, Liam always accepted that he was gay—a fact he didn’t mind flaunting to all the bullies and naysayers in school. It got his ass kicked more than once but Brenden always had his back, rescuing him time and time again, until the day Brenden left for the Marines. He missed his buddy—the crush he never confessed, lest it cost him the precious friendship—so when Madame Eve’s invitation arrived to meet Brenden, Liam faces uncertainty for the first time.

Book we are marketing: Combat Barbie  (Always a Marine #11)

Release Date: February 25, 2013

Genre: Contemporary Romance, Military Romance, Erotic Romance

You’re so beautiful…

The words haunted Mary Phillips from childhood on. Her mother’s love of beauty pageants included dressing her up like her own personal Barbie doll. She was the face of baby food, the darling of surfing commercials, and the exotic stunner who walked away with the Miss California title at eighteen, but she traded in her tiara and a lucrative modeling contract for combat boots and life as a Marine. She’s lost good friends to IEDs and sent home more walking wounded than she cares to admit, but this Marine wouldn’t trade her assignment for all the ManoloBlahniks in the world.

You’re such a nerd…

Kyle Stewart heard every variation on a theme as he went through school: nerd, geek, four-eyes, weirdo—and he rolled with it. He could count on one hand the number of girls who ever deigned to talk to him about something other than tutoring. But he had the last laugh, the only self-made millionaire in his graduating class. His start up software company went huge and his private ownership netted him two hundred million dollars at sale.

A high school reunion…

Despite the invitations, Mary didn’t plan to attend the ten year reunion. The last thing she wanted to hear was—”you could have been so much, what happened?”  But running into Kyle at the local coffee shop reminded her that not everyone judged by appearance. Kyle once swore to rub his former tormentors noses in his success, but when the reunion rolled around, he was reluctant. A chance meeting with the best looking girl he never could get the courage up to ask out on a date and he dares the request.

Can one night change the nerd and his combat Barbie’s lives?

Interview with Red Garnier (Claimed by Him)

Red Garnier Claimed by HimThe first books you read always stay with you!

Okay today I am celebrating the release of my first novella of the Billionaire’s Club series, Claimed by Him. This is a super sexy story about a powerful and elusive billionaire, Graves Buchanan, and the girl he’s vowed to stay away from (also his best friend’s little sister) Chloe Lexington. I just love this story and can’t wait to hear what readers think about it. And while we’re discussing romances, today I really want to pay tribute to those books that hooked me in on romance in the first place. Long before I became a writer, I was a reader—and still am, a very avid one, at that! And yet I will honestly never forget those amazing books I used to read late at night, when the entire household was asleep except me & the hero and heroine of the book I was reading. So here’s a list of the ten books that I read growing up and will never, ever forget.

1.       Shanna, by Kathleen E. Woodiwiss

2.        Whitney, My Love, by Judith McNaught

3.        A Knight in Shining Armor, by Jude Deveraux

4.       Something Wonderful, by Judith McNaught

5.       Outlander, by Diana Gabaldon

6.       The Lion’s Lady, by Julie Garwood

7.       Prisoner of My Desire, by Johanna Lindsey

8.       Heather and Velvet, by Teresa Medeiros

9.       The Black Lyon, by Jude Deveraux

10.   Man of my Dreams, Johanna Lindsey

What about you? What got you hooked into reading? Share your favorite first books, I’d love to hear.

For Graves Buchanan, the only thing he desires, but can never have is Chloe Lexington. He’s been secretly obsessed with this innocent “princess” who also happens to be his best friend’s sister.   But Graves would never dare touch her—he’s too badly damaged from his past, his desires are too erotic, too deep…too dark.

Chloe is just as obsessed with Graves.  She’s dreamed about him for so long, despite her brother’s warnings that she could never handle a man like him.  Now that Chloe has turned twenty-five, what she wants for her birthday is Graves and she’s determined to break down his walls to get him.  However, once she has him, can Chloe handle the torments of his past and the dark depths of passion he will unleash inside her…?

Now the land of Balaia, still riven by war, must live with the consequences. The Dawnthief spell—designed to destroy the world, but cast to save it—has torn a hole in the sky, a pathway into the dragon dimension, and, through it, unfriendly eyes are turning to Balaia.

With war already sweeping the land, there are no armies to send against the dragons. All that stands between Balaia and complete dominion by these tyrannous beasts is a tiny, but legendary band of mercenaries: The Raven. And if they fail, Balaia will fall beneath the wings of countless dragons…

Review:

This story picks up right where Dawnthief left off. The great Eldritch Evil has been defeated, but the war is far from won. And now there is a whole in the sky to boot, one that happens to link directly to a dimension full of dragons.

Compared to its predecessor, Noonshade feels…lacking. Where in Dawnthief, the Raven had to kill the Witch Lords to cut off the Wesman from their magic and save their own world, in Noonshade the urgency feels artificial. The Raven must find a way to close the rip that Dawnthief has left in the sky. They have eight days. But it is the dragons, the Kaan, who suck any feel of importance from this task. Because they flatly refuse to help in anyway, and at times are actively harmful to the process, while saying that their own lives depend on the outcome.

There seems to be some history, where a dragon who carries a human is a great shame. But this issue should have been addressed far earlier in the story. Not even the Raven, who have every reason to make such a request, never broach the topic until the very end. And it is a practical solution, and a one I kept looking to come up. Now I recognize that throwing a dragon at this problem would solve it easily and undermine the story. But you cannot leave that large of a elephant in the room, and not address it in some way.

As for the dragon’s dimension, I have to wonder, what do they eat? There are apparently thousands of dragons, many over 100 feet long, living in a world that they have all but burned to the ground. They eat lots of flamegrass (again, why?), and I think one ate a goat at one point. But how does that sustain a dragon?

As a whole, the world does feel more fleshed out, with the characters visiting now areas. It was interesting to see how the Colleges worked. The battles were great, and it is clear a lot of research was done to keep them realistic with the technological level of the world. The only question I have is in the magic system, for a four College system that does not like the share, all the mages share no more then five offensive spells, regardless of their College of study.

Overall, not as exciting as Dawntheif, but still a good book.

VBT Insatiable Book Cover BannerExcerpt Two:

Around the next bend a chicken was in the road. Jimmy saw it and swerved into a rut to avoid it. It was a wild, out-of-control move and I grabbed at the door trying to steady myself. The Jeep jerked down and then up again as Jimmy powered us out of the ditch and back onto the road. “What the f*ck!” I yelled.

“There was a chicken.”

“Next time f*cking hit the chicken!”

That’s exactly what the guy in the black Jeep did. I turned around to see the feathers exploding with a mix of blood and guts against the guy’s grill. He drove through the chicken into the shade of a tree and I saw him. I saw Blane. He was wearing wrap-around sunglasses – the kind douche bags think look cool. His mouth was a straight line, his face made of stone.

I rested my new gun on the shoulder of my seat and tried to steady my aim as we raced back past the Home Depot. Jimmy swerved around other cars, at times facing oncoming traffic, to further our escape. It was impossible to get a clear shot. I turned back around as we crested a hill and we could see the town below us.

Traffic became congested as we got closer to town. I turned around and saw that Blane was stuck several cars behind us. There was no way he could fire off any rounds with all these people around. We stopped at a red light and I waved to Blane. He raised a gun and I dropped down in my seat as I heard a window shatter. It wasn’t our car but the one right behind us.

Excerpt:

“Guardians!” A low snarl emanated from the back of his throat. “What are you doing with Guardians?”

“Stop it! Sit down!”

Morriganwasn’t sure who she was addressing, the man or the animals. Luckily, they both obeyed her command. She stepped in between them to avoid any further confrontations. The cats took a seat on either side her legs, but their posture hardly relaxed. They still glared warily at the newcomer, even though their hisses died down to an occasional soft growl.

“Dirty, filthy beasts!”Tiarn snarled as he climbed to his feet. “I hate Guardians.”

“They’re just little cats,” Morrigan told him. “What’s the big deal?”

“Just cats! Hah!” He was standing at a careful distance, even though they had started licking their paws nonchalantly. “They are much more than simple cats! Though even those I find distasteful.”

Morrigan narrowed her eyes. “What do you mean?”

“Never mind. It does not matter.” Tiarn dismissed her question with a wave of his hand. “They are not coming with us.

“They most certainly are coming!”

Tiarn growled again. “I beg to differ with you, Your Highness. They would only get in the way.  Possibly even get killed.”

Danu raised her head from her grooming to hiss at him again, as though she had taken that last statement as a personal threat. The strange reaction of her faithful sidekicks made Morrigan wonder again just how much Tiarn could be trusted. She also wondered why, when she wasn’t sure she could trust him, she still felt the undeniable urge to wrap her arms around his neck and kiss him.

“If they stay here alone, they’ll definitely get killed or at least sent to the pound,” Morrigan told him. “I can’t let that happen. So, they’re coming. End of story.”

Tiarn’s eyes flashed dangerously, and he looked like he wanted to argue, but thought better of it. “Very well, Princess. Bring your mongrel felines. Just keep in mind that Guardians and lycans do not mix well.”

“Lycans?”Morrigan repeated.

A sick feeling started to settle in her stomach, as the truth of his words sunk in. It all started to make sense—his hairy arms and chest, his reaction to the cats, even his earlier comment about smelling her out. Her dark knight had a much darker side than she had ever seen in her dreams.

“Why yes, Your Majesty. Did you not realize? You are a witch and a sorceress. And I, your faithful traveling companion, am a lycan—a werewolf.”

Barbara DeLeo

Contract for Marriage-1600

Interview Barbara DeLeo

Where do you hail from and what do you love most about your hometown? I’m from a small town at the top of the South Island of New Zealand. My husband is a winemaker so we live amongst beautiful grape vines and rolling hills. It’s a fantastic place to inspire writing and the end product from all those grapes often finds its way into my hot little hands…

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?  I wanted to be a psychologist and then later an English teacher. I did degrees in both English Lit and Psychology and then went on to teach high school English for ten years.

Tell us about your latest book.  Contract for Marriage from Entangled Publishing is about what happens when you have to compromise your own needs for those of someone else. Christo wants to acquire the villa where his mother’s been housekeeper for forty years so she can stay on in the only home she’s known. Ruby wants the same house too—for her unborn baby so it can have links to a family that’s been lost. Both Ruby and Christo must trust each other to get what they want, but first they must revisit a past littered with lies and deception.

Do you have anything new in the works and can you tell us a bit about it? I have two books scheduled to come out with Entangled in 2013. The first is a makeover story with a twist and includes sex scandals and a great recipe for three cheese gnocchi…The second is a Christmas story, again with a twist, this time the holidays happen Downunder during the summertime. It’s a reunion story about indecent propositions inspired by ghosts from the past.

Is there anything you find particularly challenging about writing? Lots! It takes an enormous amount of self-belief to put your stories out into the big wide world. That belief needs to carry through to being determined to write a better story each and every time, to meet and exceed reader expectations and to challenge ourselves and our craft. Funnily enough, those are also the things I LOVE about writing too.

What advice would you give to writers just starting out? Tell a good story but learn to tell it your way. Too often people want to write like the last big seller or get on a bandwagon. The writers I love are unique in some way. They’ve been pioneers and I love them for their own style. Also read. Always read.

Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? If so, what do you do about it? I try to write around it. I’ve recently started experimenting with writing outside a linear framework. If I’m stuck in chapter three but know what’s going to happen in chapter seven, then I’ll go write that. I write for a living so I can’t afford to have writer’s block.

Who is your favorite author and why? I have far too many to name one. As I said above, I love an author who is true to themselves and who I can trust to always give me their best work.

What books have most influenced your life? Romance novels. Because of my literary background I came late to romance and I shudder to think what my life would be without them. The hope, the fun, the positivity and passion in them are a great antidote for some of the difficulties in life.

How did you deal with rejection letters? In the beginning I found it very difficult but now I understand it’s part of the business. My belief in writing the best book for the best time means that I understand a book might be right, just not for right now.

What tools do you feel are must-haves for writers? Apart from the obvious like reading the latest books in your genre and a reliable writing program ( I LOVE Scrivener), the greatest tool for me is the amazing writing organizations I belong to and the many, many friends I’ve made in the writing world. The support I’ve found in the romance writing community has been overwhelming.

Where do you as an author draw the line on gory descriptions and/or erotic content? I write for a specific market – contemporary romance with a reasonably high heat level. My readers would be disappointed if I were to have violence or extremely explicit sexual content, but they’d also be disappointed if there was no sexual content in my books. They know what a Barbara DeLeo book will deliver and I try to live up to that.

Thanks so much for having me today! I’d love to give away an eCopy of Contract for Marriage to one commenter. Tell me how you feel reading stories set outside the U.S. The competition is open worldwide. Contest closes midnight Saturday January 26th EST.

Bio

Barbara DeLeo’s first book, co-written with her best friend, was a story about beauty queens in space. She was eleven, and the sole, handwritten copy was lost years ago much to everyone’s relief. It’s some small miracle that she kept the faith and now lives her dream of writing sparkling contemporary romance with unforgettable characters.

Degrees in English and Psychology, and a career as an English teacher, fuelled Barbara’s

passion for people and stories, and a number of years living in Europe gave her a love for romantic settings.

Discovering she was having her second set of twins in two years, Barbara knew she must be paying penance for being disorganized in a previous life and was determined to get it right this time. It’s amazing what being housebound with four preschoolers will do for the imagination and she decided it was time to follow her writing dream. Funnily enough, those first manuscripts had not a single child in them.

Married to her winemaker hero, Barbara’s happiest when she’s getting to know her latest cast of characters. She still loves telling stories about finding love in all the wrong places, but now without a beauty queen or spaceship in sight.

About the Author:

Dakota is a simple Midwest girl, who has found her passion in storytelling at a young age. Her father always said she made up the craziest stories.  Most remained unwritten though as writing wasn’t Dakota’s strong suit. That all changed in junior high when she took her first typing class. Problem solved for the dyslexic Dakota. There was no stopping her after that. She wrote her first novel her freshman year about a girl who could speak to animals on an old electric IBM typewriter her dad found at a garage sale. Now writing in several different genres, she is a published author with multiple books under her belt.  When she isn’t writing, she’s the crazy mom of three wild Indians who are posing as her children, a loving wife to the man of her dreams and a full time Graphic Design Major at IADT.

Excerpt:

Moving further into the solar, Emma looked around apprehensively, taking in every minute detail of her surroundings. Sniffing the air, she could scent nothing more than old books and the wood stacked next to the fireplace. Her father hadn’t been in the room for several hours it seemed. Thank God, because the book lined solar was her refuge from everything – the one place she could find peace.  Latching the door behind her, she slipped around one of the two high winged back chairs. Tossing the thick lap-robe up and over her body, she settled into the chair. Her plan had seemed so simple when she’d plotted with Lettie – find  a wolf to mate with – one that would bind her to him, but it seemed that each man she approached did nothing for her wolf.  The bitch continues to lay dormant no matter which male comes sniffing around. If I didn’t know better I’d think she’s an omega – hiding from all.   The low growl erupting from her throat told her of her wolf’s obvious feelings on the matter. She sighed – tired of trying to find a solution to a problem which wasn’t solvable. Perhaps running away would be best.

But even as she thought it, her wolf grunted. Strong and pure, the alpha bitch residing inside her would run from no man or beast – even if she didn’t deign to meet any of the prospective suitors Emma had paraded in front of her.

Snuggling deeper into the plush cushions, she continued to study the flames in the fireplace, and was just dropping off to sleep when the most intoxicating smell she’d ever scented teased her nostrils.  With the hint of nutmeg and pine, her inner wolf’s ear perked up as she sniffed the air. Mate?  Exhilaration chased away the lingering weariness.  Turning her head, she got her first glimpse of the man who was her mate standing next to her father.

Tall and broad shouldered, his closely cropped dark hair and neat appearance smacked of time spent in the military but the bruising and swelling around his left eye and nose attested to the fact he’d been in a recent altercation.  Then the scent of another female hit her nose.  A low growl built in her throat at the idea. Her wolf began to pace in agitation and it was all she could do to keep her from springing on the unsuspecting man.

The Great Mac’s head swung in her direction.

“Emma-girl, there you are. Your mother has been looking all over for you.”

She rose with a low snarl before skirting around the wingback chair. The rumbling in her chest grew louder the closer she stalked to the pair. The stranger shifted a bit as he took in every detail of her. She felt the heat of his eyes stroking over her form and if she’d been a normal woman she’d have preened under his gaze. But she wasn’t, and with the musky scent of another aggravating her wolf, all Emma wanted to do was mark the man. He was hers and soon he’d accept the fact. She watched as his nostrils flared before he inhaled sharply. Immediately the knowledge of what they meant to each other washed over his face. His fists clenched as she closed the distance between them, but he held his ground despite the increasing noise her bitch was making.

“What’s wrong, lass? This is your betrothed’s surrogate. He’s here to marry you in his Alpha’s stead. You have no reason to be hostile.”

Her father’s whisper was ignored as she stopped with only inches separating her aching body from the male in front of her.  She looking up into deep blue eyes, her fingers curling hesitantly against the broad expanse of his chest. He relaxed under her touch as she gave him a warning smile – his first mistake. One  she was sure he’d be leery about in the future. Everyone in her pack knew to tread softly when Emma smiled in a certain way.  It usually meant she was plotting bodily harm – and this time was no different. Her mate had allowed another to touch him – to take what was rightfully hers and it didn’t matter to her wolf that it’d been before her – she demanded that Emma show the man the error of his ways.

With her wolf’s first heat upon her, triggered by her mate’s presence, her fingernails grew into razor sharp talons as her voice became raspier. “Mine!” she hissed, before piercing into the heavy chest muscles under her palms – marking him. He stiffened as if he’d been hit by lightning as a low moan passed his parted lips. She flexed her fingers, digging deep – needing to impress upon him severity of giving another what she considered as hers.

“Fuck.” His head tipped back as his torso arched away from her – his lower body swayed towards hers. Against her stomach she felt  an unfamiliar hardness  – one  which would’ve had her wolf purring – if wolves purred.

“Emma Rose MacDonald! Release him!” Her father moved closer – too close for Emma’s wolf’s comfort. She bared her teeth at her sire. As an alpha bitch, she cared less about pack policies when it came to her mate. He had no right to interfere.

“Mine!” She snapped at Liam. He froze before a low rumble of his displeasure filled the room.

Normally, Chelsea Kingdom is a pretty quiet place, but recently there have been multiple murders…by a vampire! The worst time for Vlad Dhalgren–centuries-old vampire–to move into town to escape vampire hunters and an angry mob.

Vlad’s chances of blending in and living a normal life is not likely to happen with other vampires hiding in the shadows around the castle; others who have been hiding in plain sight for years.

Anna Everett the crown princess of the Kingdom of Chelsea, and, despite her lineage, is not a wizard like her father.

She has only one friend–Valerian Moreton, who has secrets he’s never shared, but now those secrets could see him and Anna killed…

Review:

Ahh, Vlad. The Prince, the hero, the impaler, the vampire. So many faces, even his true history is shrouded in myth and legend. It is this diversity that makes hm such a fun character. In this incarnation his vampire nature has made him a virtual hermit until the day he is ripped from his safe little world by a very unexpected source, the King of Chelsea, who not only knows what Vlad is, but needs his help.

Valerian on the other hand also finds himself a prisoner, but his prison is his own body. Crippled to the point of paralysis by a spell, he lives through a construct. But not even this prevents him from going to school and surpassing his teachers in record time.

Both Vlad and Val have turned their prisons into a fortress, shielding them from the world they fear will shun or hurt them. And both of them must go through the difficult and painful process of learning to trust and even reach out to others.

Anna is warm and brave and decidedly not a damsel in distress. Not only does she save herself most of the time, she saves others, even if doing so means risking her own safety. Her father, the King, is wonderfully quirky and mysterious.

I really like this story, not only because it is very creative, but because the characters show a level of growth and willingness to change that seems so hard to come by sometimes. I found myself wondering what would happen next and if a character would make it out alive. It was exciting and a lot of fun.

Overall, I highly recommend this story and I look forward to the next in this series.

A Vienna Holiday – Lynn Crain

Hi everyone!

The holidays are here and this is one of my most favorite times of the year. I love the chill in the air, the snow on the ground and just knowing that the Christmas tree will be put up by all.  Now, I’ve gone from having a typical US Christmas in the southwest where most of that didn’t happen to being in Vienna, Austria where I ask daily if it’s going to snow. My husband and I came here in May of 2011 so he could have his dream job.

One of the ways that I decided to get used to where I now found myself living is to write books set in this area. I won’t lie, at first it was hard and I wasn’t sure if I could do it. But with the events of the past year, I was ill for quite a while, I decided that I needed to enjoy my new venue. And I’d start with my favorite season. So far, I have five books planned here and when you get the Christmas book, you will get a sneak peak of the next book, Night Train.

My Christmas book, which is coming out on Christmas Eve, goes into great detail about the Viennese Christmas.  In this book I talk about the Christkindlemarkts and Adventmarkts where all manner of holiday goods are sold. There are food booths as well as the important hot drink booths as it can get quite frigid here during the winter. These drink booths have all manner of libations, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic. People meet each other here for a cup of holiday cheer many times during the season, me included.

My friends in the States have told me that these markets are considered some of the best in the world and I can vouch for that in some ways. They certainly are beautiful. The cover of my forthcoming Christmas book, A Viennese Christmas, has the Rathaus in the background that I see every time I go there. There are many booths – both drink and food, as well as decorations galore. The tree is beautiful and the building is a sight to behold as it is lit up very brightly.

I can’t imagine a more romantic place or time to fall in love. Here’s a little bit about the book:

Blurb: Sign language interpreter, Amanda Kranz, wants to find her soul mate but fears her chance has past due to the death of her childhood sweetheart. Finding sexy historian Henry Wakeman during an outing in her new home of Vienna, Austria, may have been a stroke of luck. When his ex-fiancée shows up just as their relationship starts to sizzle, Amanda must decide if standing up for what really she wants will give her lifetime happiness. Or will she be destined to spend life alone?

Now, I know writers are told to write what they know. A NYT bestseller told me that was incorrect thinking and that I should write about what I could imagine. I’ve taken his advice to heart with this story. I am learning all about Vienna, so it’s becoming something I know and love.  I hope you enjoy this short excerpt from the story.

Excerpt ~ A Viennese Christmas

Her disappointment must have been plain on her face as she found herself suddenly gazing into the greenest eyes in a very handsome male face. A question in German followed as she tried to ascertain just what he said.

“I’m sorry,” she stated, her confusion obvious. “I’ve only picked up a word or two since I’ve been here. Do you speak English?”

“You’re American?” he questioned without the accent most Austrians possessed.

“Don’t make it sound like such a curse. There are a lot of us, you know.” Her indignation evident in her tone.

His rich laughter filled the space, warming her to her bones in ways she hadn’t expected. “Sorry. I guess one does pick up the attitudes of where they live.”

She looked at him puzzled. “That’s that supposed to mean?”

“Henry Jager, American, at your service ma’am.” His sweeping bow brought a smile to her lips.

“Amanda Kranz and I hardly think I qualify as a ma’am.” She stuck her hand toward him. His firm grasp sent an electric sensation as she felt the spark deep within her. She swore he felt it too as his eyes darkened.

“Do you prefer Amanda or Mandi? I know there’s not much of a choice with Henry.” His serious gaze spot of his interest.

Laughter bubbled up in her, the first such emotion in weeks. “Henry is a fine, strong name. And it doesn’t matter much with mine.” His hot look made her want to shiver in anticipation of what she could only speculate.

“Really? I would have thought your business associates would call you Amanda. Now your intimate contacts I expect call you Mandi.”

She gazed at him. Intimate contacts, now there was a misnomer. It had been years since she’d had any intimate contacts of the male persuasion. “Sounds good to me.”

“You gave in too easy.” He reluctantly let go of her hand as his look took on a more serious aspect. “Are you meeting someone?”

She shook her head. “No one to meet.”

“Good.” He grabbed her hand again, placing it in the crook of his arm. “Have you ever been to one of these before?” Henry expertly meandered around people, baby carriages and more as he led her to the next booth.

“Not really. I saw them last year but being so new to the city, I couldn’t bring myself to go to one alone.” She gazed at the Rathaus beyond them, remembering how intimidated she’d been by building even though it had a Christmas tree in front.

His eyes narrowed. “Sounds like you’re still a relative newcomer.”

“I suppose so. I got here in November of last year.”

“Ah – your impression?” His brows lifted when he drew back as if to study her face.

“Very commercialized. I expected something more – ” she struggled to find the right word. “– more homey, more authentic – more Austrian.”

Henry gazed around a moment before looking back at her. “I see your point. This is probably the one Christkindlemarkt that’s got the least to offer in specialized, authentic goods in my opinion except it does have a certain ambiance. And of course, there’s the skating rink as well as the park decorations.”

Her brow arched in amazement. She really hadn’t expected anyone to agree with her. All the women she knew gushed over every one of them. “You agree with me?”

His naughty smile was breathtaking. “Most definitely. This is the one where most of the tourists come. While there are some very Austrian things here hidden amongst the drivel, most are not unique or special in any way.”

“My thoughts exactly. Where exactly does one find more traditional items?” Astonishment spread through her. She had not once heard anyone say a negative comment about Vienna. All her colleagues gushed over the city but as far as she was concerned, it was just another place to live.

They stopped in front of a food booth, the aroma tantalizing. “Would you like something hot to drink?”

The brisk breeze nipped at her cheeks and she felt the cold through her coat. She definitely could use something to warm her up. “Sure.”

Hope you liked this little foray into a Viennese Christmas. Look for it at all major ebook outlets (Amazon, Smashwords, ARe and more) on Christmas Eve.
